Ken Selzer, CPA, was elected as the Kansas Insurance Commissioner in 2014 and began serving in that position on January 12, 2015. He previously worked in the reinsurance industry for more than 30 years, most recently as an Executive Managing Director for a worldwide brokerage and insurance services firm.
In addition to his credentials as a Certified Public Accountant, Ken has earned a number of professional designations, including Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Reinsurance (ARe), and Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).
Ken is active in many professional, community, and charitable organizations. He has served as President of the Rotary Club of Leawood, Chairman of the Kansas Society of CPAs Educational Foundation, and President of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Heart of America Chapter. He is also an alumnus of Leadership Kansas.
He currently serves on the Advisory Council of the KSU College of Business and is a member of the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees. He has been inducted into the KSU Accounting Hall of Fame.
Ken graduated with honors with a B.S. in Accounting from Kansas State University. He earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.
A fourth generation Kansan, Ken grew up in McPherson and Marion Counties in central Kansas. He has been married for 36 years to his wife, Deb, from rural Miami County, KS. They have two daughters, Mallory and Mackenzie. Mallory and her husband, Colin, are the proud parents of Ken and Deb’s first grandchild.
Ken and Deb provide scholarships for graduating high school seniors in the Goessel Unified School District No. 411 in Marion County, and also support scholarship programs at Kansas State University as well as the Kansas Society of CPAs. They have developed and continue to support an innovative teacher recognition program in the Blue Valley School District, and also support teacher recognition and student scholarship programs in other school districts in Kansas.
I am a CPA and a businessman, who has proven that you can achieve success in managing an important part of state government using the basic principles that every successful business uses by focusing on customer service and being ever more efficient in its operations!
I was elected 3 years ago to serve as your Kansas Insurance Commissioner. Since then we have calmly and thoughtfully managed our way to more than a 15% reduction in the number of employees and more than a 15% reduction in costs. And all the while we ramped up our focus on the customer, the citizens of Kansas!
Our staff did such a great job of focusing on the customer and in being more and more responsive that an independent outside organization ranked the Kansas Insurance Department the 2nd highest in the nation! We ranked exceptionally high in customer responsiveness, in transparency, our web site, and other important factors.
In short, I've been in state government long enough to prove we can make it work better, but not long enough to accept more politics as usual.
